NO-ID is Ian Davies.

At the heart of my work are people. The interaction required to produce a startling image. Mostly its a playful approach. And a little bit cheeky. Never be afraid to push the envelope; Linguistic clichés are OK but never visual ones. People fascinate me. Their features and mannerisms. Personality and posture. Individual style and eccentricity. The positions they are in, both professionally and socially. I love to see people enjoying themselves. I thrive of shooting social events. The camera is a participant. Get in there. Move around. Shock. Surprise. Real. Oh yes, definitely real – the spirit of the moment. Capturing the essence. Energy and movement. Paparazzi chic. But respectful. I love it when light bleeds in, rearranging colour, bringing artifice and energy to an image.

I aim to create aesthetically pleasing images that exude life and deliver punctum. Images that are edgy but publishable within the desired context. Although I'd consider my photography to be realism in style, I like to add a touch of surrealism where appropriate. Slightly disorientating. With myself as the photographer, to be the source of what is expressed. My practice allows me to bounce with energy. Release adrenaline. I believe this is evident in the finished artifact.

I hope to continue working with a broad range of clients, from a variety of industries and backgrounds. My work includes both still and moving image. I enjoy the collaborative process. Work well in a creative team. But. Can also be the lone wolf – off seeking things. Quiet. Perceptive. Another sort of instinct.

2009, Winner of the Ian Evans Photography Prize
2006, Runner up in Marketing Birmingham's Young Photographer of The Year

Working with a host of high profile clients, Ian has developed his professional practice and worked with some of the most respected members of the creative industries. Attaining a first class honours degree in 2008 showed Ian’s commitment and understanding of visual arts and media.

Ian studied a BA in Media and Communication at Birmingham City University specialising in media photography. This particular course offered 50% cultural theory, which enabled him to study discourses of visual culture, issues and representations, the concepts surrounding sexuality and creativity in the media. The other 50% percent of the course consisted of practical work and Ian not only developed his technical knowledge of photography but studied and analysed the photographic industry considering its production and consumption, along with developing his practices of digital image making. He also learned aspects of design, thus developing his own visual style.

Ian previously studied a HND in media, along with a City and Guilds in television and video production, both at Sutton Coldfield College (a franchise of BCU). He developed a keen interest in moving images and was able to develop his technical and creative skills including his camera work, lighting, editing and the direction of talent to camera.
